Richard Johnson takes the power of a photo to a new level by illustrating the invisible and eternal scars victims of emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse endure. Participants, children and their parents, were invited to choose a “hurt word” that has impacted their life. Makeup artists then painted the word on participants’ faces or bodies, integrating the word into simulated wounds — bruises, scratches, and burns.

"We chose the name “Weapon of Choice” because we have learned that, for the abuser, using words to harm is a choice. While listening to the stories from participants, we discovered how closely physical abuse followed verbal abuse. Often, when an abuser chooses to inflict harm, verbal abuse is just one of the weapons in the arsenal.” Richard Johnson
