Formento + Formento 'Cinematic Chronicles'

Snap! Space presents ‘CINEMATIC CHRONICLES,’ a solo exhibit of Formento + Formento’s works in America, Cuba, Mexico, Japan and India, as well as a showcase of their short film ‘Voyage,’ presented at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The dynamic husband-wife team have made an art of their unique strain of photography. Exuding an eerie sensuality combined with a narrative cinematic sensibility, the ambiguous nature of the characters and scenarios remind us of David Lynch and Hopper-esque landscapes. ‘Cinematic Chronicles’ is an around the world retrospective of Formento + Formento’s body of work.

Hysteria’s staged photographs present a sense of anxiety illuminating post world war II era, a world we still know and contend with today.
A mise-en-scene through the streets of old Havana, amongst the crumbling walls of colonial architecture, abandoned casinos, hotels and cinemas, Formento + Formento highlighting memories of the glory that once was.
India: Another way of Seeing is an eye opening photo gallery showcasing the real life drama and cultural differences that Indians go through every day.
Strange Fascination, the couple’s recent work and perhaps the darkest in nature, deals with concepts associated with misfortune, tragedy and survival.
The highly staged and melodramatic images are inspired by theater, 1950’s Japanese cinema, the photographs of Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama, Edo woodblock prints, and the erotic imagery of Ero Guro paintings.
Circumstance: America Down on Bruised Knees, the duo’s first conceptual series and breakthrough. The success of Circumstance gave birth to a limited edition coffee table book (info@snaporlando.com).
Displacement, cultural migration and memory are central to the theme of this poetic short film and photographic work. After two consecutive years with entire booths dedicated to their work at Art Basel Miami, Formento + Formento, showcase an out-of-the-box presentation at the 2106 Cannes short film festival.
