'Douglas Kirkland: A Life in Pictures’ Opening

A retrospective exhibition of Douglas Kirkland’s timeless photographs. On the occasion of its 10th year Anniversary, Snap! Orlando brought back legendary Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland for a series of events. Exhibition curated by Patrick & Holly Kahn.

Kirkland has been at the cutting edge of fashion, photojournalism and portraiture, working for the world’s most reputable magazines, for more than 50 years. As a young photographer in 1961 he was assigned to photograph Marilyn Monroe and during several hours in a closed studio one night, captured a stunning portfolio of alluring and intimate images that survive to this day as a testament to her beauty and vulnerability.

Douglas Kirkland is today one of the best-known long-term photographers of our time and has worked for Look and Life magazines, where he photographed such icons as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, Jack Nicholson, Mick Jagger, Coco Chanel, Brigitte Bardot, John Lennon, Andy Warhol, Charlie Chaplin, Grace Jones, and countless others. Douglas Kirkland’s fine art photography has been exhibited all over the world and is featured in the permanent collection of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra Australia, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Eastman House in Rochester, the Houston Center for Photography, and the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.

Born in 1934 in Fort Erie, Canada, he began his career as an apprentice to acclaimed photographer Irving Penn in 1957. He has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American S.O.C., Photographer of the Year from PMA, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from CAPIC in his native Toronto, Canada in May 2006. He currently lives and works in Hollywood Hills, CA.

Opening Friday, February 07, 2020, 7-10 PM, in presence of the artist. Gallery hours, Thurs-Sat. 11 AM-4 PM. Exhibition on view through May 23, 2020.
