ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

CONSTRUCT::CONNECT showcases the work of Shannon Rae Lindsey and her multifaceted professional practice as an interdisciplinary artist, university educator, and academic art gallery director. Hybridity is a cornerstone for Lindsey’s approach as an artist embracing experimental practices and unconventional materials, as an educator to encourage critical thought and interdisciplinary research, and as a gallery director supporting exhibitions to connect practicing artists with students and the central Florida community. The combination of these roles uniquely inform one another to enrich her contributions to the community by connecting materials, process, and ideas. The exhibition also features works by UCF MFA students and Faculty artists: Gabe Cortese, Ericka Sobrack, Brittney Fucheck, Leo Cordovi, Nelson J Garcia, Ryan Price, Leeann Rae, Anthony Mancuso, Ashley Taylor, Jason Burrell, Brooks Dierdorff, Ivan Riascos, and Robert Aiosa.

ARTIST STATEMENT

How do we determine objects as useful, useless, ordered, or disordered? These terms are elusive and subject to change through our perception and point of comparison. They can never be entirely true nor entirely false; they exist somewhere between. Through mixed-media installation, sculpture, and drawing, my work embodies notions of order and disorder with man-made construction materials to challenge their conventional context, setting, and utility. My manipulations and processes create dramatic physical shifts to imply the objects could never revert to the original manufactured state, but simply continue to change. I encourage viewers to visually and physically engage with these manufactured materials in new and unexpected ways by highlighting formal qualities and placing them outside of their traditional context.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shannon Rae Lindsey received an MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Carolina and a BFA in Fine Arts from the University of South Florida. She has participated in twelve solo exhibitions and over thirty-five group exhibitions as an interdisciplinary artist exploring installation, sculpture, and drawing. Her artwork embodies notions of order and disorder with man-made construction materials that challenge their conventional context, setting, and utility. Her recent solo exhibition Displaced Processes was showcased at the Steven F. Gately Gallery at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina and she was the winner of the 2014 South Carolina 701 CCA Prize.
